MISSION — The Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks departed on their journey to Round Rock for the UIL 5A state baseball tournament at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning surrounded by friends, family and supporters from across the Rio Grande Valley.

It was just like a football Friday night as the Sharyland Pioneer drumline, cheerleaders and even the Chick-Fil-A cow were on hand to send off the RGV’s first baseball state qualifier since Harlingen South in 2007 in their charter bus.

Parents and students held signs with motivational words, encouraging the Diamondbacks to bring back a state title to the Valley, while a Sharyland Pioneer flag flew over the goodbye from the ladder of a fire truck from the city of Mission.

Sharyland Pioneer senior shortstop and pitcher Jacob Rosales said he’s been blown away by the support the Diamondbacks have received.

“The coolest thing has been seeing all the support from people all over the Valley,” Rosales said.

Sharyland Pioneer (37-8) will face Georgetown (40-4-1) in the 5A state semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. The winner will advance to Saturday’s 5A state championship game to face the winner of Colle... Click here to read full article
